Additional Details

African-American artist Melvin Tapley, while best known as a cartoonist, produced a considerble body of highly charged political drawings. In 1946, Isaac Woodward, a veteran of World War II, had his eyes gouged out by a police-chief in South Carolina, following an incident in which he refused to move to the back of a segregated bus. The chief was exonerated by an all white jury.
